Grocery & Pantry Challenge Combined Jan 11th to 30th,2011..spend less & use up what you have

Well sticking to $21 challenge didn't quite work for me so decided to modify it and do a new combo challenge!   To cut back spending on groceries and use up what I have in the house.

Since each family is different, I leave it to you to decide how much money you limit yourself too.  I think between $40 to $50 works for me.  With the costs of fresh stuff and dairy here that seems to be a baseline.  a jug a milk which basically I go though one every 5days is $5  ..I spent about $40 today and yesterday on creamo, milk, bread, fruit and veggies, yogurt (cookies & tea & choc almond spread from the liquidation place)  and marked down hotdogs. good type for dh.

so set for the next while except bread because I had picked up a loaf as an extra for later in the week but dh had put the wireless router with the bread in the same area and the heat made it all go moldy! so some buns and the loaf we just started on went bye bye..in the food composter.

used a seafood lasagna from the freezer for dinner last night and bought leftover xmas cookies to the meeting last night  tonight leftovers and hotdogs for the kids.

So set your limit and see how far you can stretch your grocery dollars by using up what you have, being creative with leftovers and getting those sales!

I am going to stock up on some pasta. It is 79 cents a lb. which is cheap for here. I only have a few pounds left. I will buy at least ten pounds. Maybe more, will have to check the money. I will need milk agian this week. Hopefully that will be all.  Babs

I am in on this as well to see how I do??? I am also trying my own budget  shopping plan to see if this helps cut down a few things in my house I have been able to CUT my BIG $$ SODA from the house and ME :O) :O)!!!!..

Costco food items for buget total is $60 twice a month for a total of $120 I currently spend just random shopping each month $300 for 2 YES I know it's a lot.. I have in the last 2 months gone down to $250 now my goal was to go lower to do this I decided to buy these 4 times at Costco to limit me shopping around making a bigger mess as well as budget more for an upcoming surgery dd will be having when I know I will not have time to Read ads and deal with pricing for 6 months..(trust me last time she had surgery it was a mess so trying to get ahead of the game we assume we have 1 month to do this..)

We are cleaning out the freezer and getting rid of some of the things we eat as 2 like our premade meals that are in our Deep freezer the need to be used up asap..and making cookies from scratch saves us even more :O) been doing that for weeks nowand menu planning which stops a few other issue we were having :O) wish us luck

10 pounds of chicken breasts $19.99

5.5 pounds of Stir Fry Vegggie $7.48

    12 Turkey burgers $10.48

10 pounds of shredded cheese $13.98

has been an odd week for food.  forgot to say that some of the food I got was asian stuff for my student since he is staying past january.

he hasn't been eating much here...so we have been eating the smokies,  seafood lasagna etc.  last night ds decided he was hungry and had 2 yogurts and then a smokie for dinner and  dd had carrot soup from the freezer.  ds had the wonton soup from the freezer the other day when we had chicken soup.  dh hasn't been feeling well so has a thing for fresh bread and pb.

I polished off a box of lemon creme cookies in the last couple of days lol .

I have a very unusual and wanted "problem".  Since the holidays I can't get my fridge to thin.

In the past two weeks, we've used up several items but there really hasn't been any available holes in the fridge.

I've used up a loaf of french bread, 1/2 a package of shredded beef, 4 packages of cheese, a bottle of bbq sauce, two bottles of commercially prepared salad dressing, 3/4 a package of turkey pepperoni, a bundle of rosemary, some chicken breasts, 2 containers of grapes, a lime, a lemon, various clementines, and a jug of milk.  My fridge is still stuffed.

Today for lunch DH and DD ate the rest of the french bread pizza and some corn salad.  I ate the rest of the quesadillas, quacamole, and the corn salad.

This is a wonderful problem to have, so I won't have to buy much this weekend for groceries.  I did the $21 challenge and spent $0.  So far this week has been the same.

I have some whiting fillets that I need to use up. They came in an Angel Food Ministries box a few months back and have just been sitting in my freezer because I didn't want to deal with them. They've got skin and bones both, and it's supposed to be a rather fishy tasting fish.

BB had some suggestions for me as far as how to use it up. I think I'm going to make a garlicky tomato based chowder with it, hoping that the garlic and tomato will combat some of the fishiness.

Mama to a teen and a preschooler -- oh, the fun!

what about fish tacos?  the seasoning would mask the taste.

either hotdogs or look in the freezer for something easy.

So far this week, I'm at $3 for eggs and milk.  My grocery list, however, is starting to grow. Course, I haven't seen the sale papers yet, LOL!

We've done real well with the stuff we've pulled from the freezer ... have enough planned-overs (or refashioned planned-overs) to last us through the weekend!
