    Drought in Australia

Hi everyone from Adelaide, South Australia. My name is Mand, I am 32, mother of two kids.

We're in the middle of the worst drought in the history of our country over here, things are really bad. Soon there will not be enough water to grow crops and food prices will double, including meat. Not sure what to do about it....

The fact is, we've been farming unsustainably for a long time, using water from the river system to grow crops like rice that we really should not grow in a dry country. But I try to grow as much of our food as possible, and soon with our current water resrictions and lack of rain, that won't be possible. It will hit farmers and people on low income (like us) the hardest.

Hi Mand, nice to see a fellow Aussie!

yep, its got me worried sick too. It makes me so angry: it won't be the rich people suffering - they'll still drive their expensive cars and go to well-watered golf courses. They won't care if their grocery bills are double, its nothing to them. Its the poor people and the farmers who are bearing the brunt as always.

Welcome Mand. I am so sorry to hear about your situation. Are there any plans for resources?

    Re: Drought in Australia

Welcome to the community, Mand. We've had drought in this area, too, but maybe not as bad as yours (yet). Farmers didn't even plant some fields last year because they couldn't get enough water for them. Most of the area around here is irrigated, although there are wheat fields to the east. Someone said there would be a lot more wheat and grain grown this year because it doesn't take a lot of water.

Anyway, we've learned a few things about saving water and I'm sure you have, too. I'm going to start a thread and maybe we can brainstorm a little in it. I'd like to find new ways to save, too, since this year promises to be more of the same.

I've been hearing the news reports on the drought.  Sad  I hope that it will end soon!

    Re: Drought in Australia

I know, it's such a worry. Seeing the pictures of the dead river on the news makes me feel ill - I grew up on the river, and the town I grew up in will be in dire straits. It totally relies on the river for everything.

We already live as cheaply as possible - cheap meat, vegies, cooking from scratch, making our own bread, never eating out. I don't know where we can cut any more corners... This is the last thing we need.

I am another fellow Aussie. It is good to hear from other Aussies even if the news isn't good. I hope the drought comes to an end soon.
